Tame Those Foul Dogs!

As men, we need to face an ugly fact: we stink.

It’s just one of those things. We grow beards and we stink – especially our feet.
I’m lucky that I have only a moderate case of man-foot, but my gym shoes are positively atrocious!

At first, you don’t really notice – the gym is no garden of roses after all. But pretty soon you’re holding your breath while you tie the laces and then on some hot summer afternoon you open the car door and, wiping the tears from your eyes, you wonder if AAA includes a service that could possibly remove that foul stench!

I hunted around on the web and found a few remedies but Etsy-fan that I am, I wanted to try something a little more natural and hand-made. I found these awesomely masculine-looking shoe pillows made from recycled t-shirt material and filled with cedar wood shavings (manly!) and lavender buds (ok, not so manly) to kick that nasty funk.

Look out shoe-stink, your days of unchallenged reign are over!

Me Time? Mani Time!

Winter is cruel for many reasons — cold temperatures, bitter winds, cars frozen solid in a block of ice, and, of course, alligator-skin hands. But no more! This January I resolve to give my hands the royal treatment they deserve, without breaking the bank. First I start with C.O. Perfect My Eyeliner Cat Eye

Whoever does Kim Kardashian's makeup...will you please come live with me and get me dolled up every morning to look like this?

Seriously, she's the ULTIMATE glamazon and this year I'm turning up my glam-o-meter. I already rock a serious cat eye daily, but I'm a little...inconsistent to say it lightly. I can never get it perfectly even or get those cut, sharp edges.

I've been a pencil gal for years. With sensitive eyes, hypoallergenic makeup is a MUST for me (LOVE YOU, ALMAY!), but those sharp lines just never seem to look as defined with a pencil (despite the built-in sharpener). So, it's time to revert to liquid — right? But I don't even know where to begin my eye defining journey.

If anyone's got a good recco, I'd LOVE to hear it. In the meantime, here are a few how-tos I'm going to test in hopes of refining my line technique:

Schedule Monthly Massages!

Now that I'm working out, I'm also feeling the burn (big time!). So, I'm going to make sure I take some time on a monthly basis to get a massage!

And, I'm not necessarily talking a full blown "in the spa" massage (because really, who can afford that on a regular basis?). Although I may treat myself to that wonderful experience every once in a while, I'm going to make this resolution about WE-TIME and enlist my husband to work his magic on my tired bones. It saves us money (something he is ALWAYS for) and it gives us some intimate time together...scheduled at that!

I'm running to the my nearest Bath & Body Works store now (in my gym sneaks!) to load up on some Aromatherapy Stress Relief Eucalyptus Spearmint Massage Oil (and an Aromatherapy Sensuality Candle to set the mood...).

Lose That Pesky Remaining Baby Weight

(and that is totally FOR ME!)

I took the plunge and purchased a Wii Fit Plus Personal Trainer. It was a bit of an investment up front, but I figure it will pay for itself after a few months of not paying for that underused gym membership that I've been harboring in my back pocket for years (you know the one that I never have time to actually leverage).

So, I'm taking the pre-set 30-day challenge and securing 45 minutes of me-time to actually work out every night! My stretch goal is to lose 15 lbs in 2 months, but even if I only lose 10 (and I will!) I will be happy.

After 3 days of training things are going well — I actually look forward to "hitting the gym" every night now that it's in the comfort of my own home. That and the pay off of "Little Mr. Daddy" upstairs making dinner for me (and a glass of wine...at least every OTHER night) isn't too shabby either.

Cold Feet? Try Pure Pediform Poetry

I have a confession that belies my mostly fashionista persona: when the winter solstice draws near and those wicked Midwestern winds start prying their icy fingers under my windows in the middle of the night, I tend to crawl into bed with socks on (much to my husband's dismay). How else to keep my diminutive digits warm?
My every night favorites are super soft, super warm double layer socks infused with ultra moisturizing shea butter (so my weary soles get a pampering softening treatment while staying toasty!) from Bath and Body Works.

This Christmas, I'm hoping Santa will slip a pair of cashmere bedsocks from

Every year when Christmas rolls around, I always have grandiose plans to build a gingerbread house. In all my 26 years I have yet to follow through on that plan.

This year Bath & Body Works has made my gumdrop and gingerbread architecture dreams come true with their Gingerbread Luminary. No royal icing necessary. No painstaking time spent with sticky fingers and broken dreams (and gingerbread walls!). This is candyland made easy and — you may not believe it — but it smells even more divine because you can pick your fave 3-Wick Candle to place inside and light it up!

I'm begging for one with a Vanilla Shortbread Candle because everyone knows I LOVE the scent of baked goods...and why not fake it if you can't bake it?!

I’ll admit these aren’t glass slippers and I’m really not a wicked stepmom but these Bewitching Booties from Anthropologie would rock my 17-year-old stepdaughter’s world. Despite the fact that a majority of Americans think a martini is made with vodka, a classic martini (think Mad Men) can only be made with gin. I love gin because it’s aromatic like an intoxicating perfume. It’s infused with an apothecary blend of berries (mainly piney juniper), roots, herbs, spices and fruits.

Since my discerning gentleman husband loves his gin and dry vermouth martinis, I’m surprising him with a bottle of subtle, smooth, and sophisticated Plymouth English Gin. It’s a complex concoction of juniper berries, lemon and orange peel, orris root (the root of the iris plant), angelica root, cardamom pods, and coriander seeds. His taste buds will be thrilled!

No, it's not Disco Duck (don't worry, I'd never do that to you Little Misses!).

Instead, I must ask: Forever 21 what are you trying to do to me (and my piggy bank for that matter)?

Yet again, the Twist Collection returns (with MUCH LESS time lapsed between I might add) and this time it's all disco balls and platform shoes! Disco 21 debuted today and I must say this is the wildest, sexiest Twist of the bunch (I know you thought it was Cirque 21, but not so much).

Disco 21 is all about the drama, the glam and the party. Lots of black. Lots of purple. Lots of serious sequin action! If you're an early shopper like I am, this is perfectly timed to start planning your New Year's party outfit!

For years, Christmas has been less about giving (and getting) gifts in my family and more about togetherness, traditions, and helping others. I do, however, have unfettered dreams about what my wish list would be like if I were married to a gazillionaire and not my can’t-live-without, beloved high school English teacher hubby.

Here’s my #1 Wish List item:

When I'm 80, I’d like to say, “I had a farm in Africa,” like Karen Blixen in Isak Dinesen’s Den afrikanske Farm (known in English as Out of Africa). Now, my dream is closer to reality with the 15 luxury private safari homes being built as a joint venture between Tara Getty and &Beyond (formerly known as CC Africa). Located where the St. Lucia Wetlands meet the wilds of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and bordering a World Heritage Site. (Now, if my sweet hubby can only win the Mega Millions lottery!) Since that’s so over-the-top, I’ll settle for a second honeymoon in a Forest Lodge at the Phinda Private Game Reserve. Each lodge is nestled deep in the trees and built on stilts that lift it above the rare dry sand forest floor. Phinda’s home to seven unique ecosystems and teems with exotic wildlife (oddly, the baby wart hogs were one of my favorite sightings!) and the famous Big Five (lion, African elephant, leopard, rhinoceros, and Cape Buffalo). The twice-daily game drives! The gourmet meals and exquisite South African wine! The sun-downers (cocktails) out in the wild! We're Making Our Lists...

Believe it or not, Halloween just happened, but I've been well into the Christmas spirit long before October was ever a glimmer in 2009's eye. I make my list around July or August (and check it about a million OCD times). For me, there's just no reason to wait 'til November or December to start shopping. I like to spread it all out (and torture everyone around me with the anticipation that I've already found their perfect gift!).

So, here at Little Miss Nose It All, I'm more than ready for everyone else to finally join me in prepping for prezzies! Fall's in full swing and even though we haven't hit Halloween quite yet, Thanksgiving is already on everyone's mind. And before you ever get to the pumpkin pie, you're bound to indulge in some cranberry sauce.

Today's Scentbug Home Fragrance Oil recipe is a little reminiscent of the tart sweetness of this turkey day essential.

Sugared Berry

Mix 15 drops of Warm Vanilla Sugar with 5 drops of Midnight Pomegranate.

Costumes for Two

I have to admit, I have never really liked Halloween. When it comes to costumes, too many things can go wrong (has anyone else ever dressed up on the WRONG DAY? In middle school this can traumatize you for years...) This brings me to one of the many things I love about my husband...the chance to dress up as a couple! The possibilities are literally endless...

1. Reality TV & Tabloids
An endless source of pure insanity just waiting to be translated into an uber-creative costume. Last year I saw a great Madonna & A-Rod, and don't think there won't be a few Jon & Kate's out and about this year. A friend of mine is going as Octomom complete with big red lips, black wig and 8 dolls sewed on her shirt; and although that isn't a couples costume, it's a great show of creativity.

2. TV & Movies (Cartoons Included!)
These costumes are as much a statement about your favorite movie/character/actor as anything else. Juno & Bleeker, Shaggy & Scooby, High School Musical, Olive & Popeye, Twilight, The Hulk, Where the Wild Things are...to name a few.

3. Junk Food
I admit I might be biased here...but I love junk food and have always wanted to dress up as a can of Pepsi. These costumes are simple, straight-forward, and can make a statement about your favorite snack-of-choice. When we were still dating someone texted my husband and said "hey I saw a picture of you and your girl...you were a twinkie and she was a slice of pizza. Great costumes!" Uh yeah, not us, but the costumes were pretty sweet.

4. Group Costumes
The more the merrier, right? Take the couples concept one step further and get all of your friends involved. My favorite example of this was when 3 of my friends went to a party as The Swan. The guy dressed a plastic surgeon, complete with scrubs, fake blood and a deranged look. One girl was the "before" — dumpy, no makeup, fake zits, bad clothes. The other girl was the "after" — tons of makeup, big hair, high heels and the maximum amount of push up bra allowed by Victoria's Secret. Awesome.

Having a Halloween bash?

Scare up some fun with this scrumptious bone-chilling drink — the Boo-Nilla Shake !

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup whole milk
2 pints vanilla ice cream
1 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar
1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips

*Makes six 8-ounce servings

DIRECTIONS FOR FACES:

For 12 faces, place 1/3 cup (2 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl; microwave on high until melted, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes; stir. Using a small brush, paint chocolate inside glasses (if it hardens too soon, microwave 20 seconds more). Let set a few minutes before adding shake. Prepare glasses up to a day ahead, but don't fill until ready to serve.

DIRECTIONS FOR SHAKE:

Blend milk and 1 pint ice cream in a blender until smooth. With machine running, add remaining pint ice cream, one scoop at a time; blend until smooth. Pour milkshake into six 8-ounce glasses decorated with chocolate faces, filling them 3/4 full.
Put cream in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Beat on medium speed until soft peaks form. Add confectioners' sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form.Transfer whipped cream to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/2-inch plain round tip (such as Ateco #806). Pipe spiral mounds of whipped cream on top of milkshakes. Serve immediately

Twilight "tweets" from a 40-something Scentarista

I was an early adopter of AOL, electronic books, Palm Pilot, and computerized check-in at the airport. Right now, I love my iPhone, Facebook, LinkedIn, and wandering all over the web via my bedside MacBook Air. Unfortunately, I’m not into tweeting (sigh). I signed up for a Twitter account one Saturday, felt immediately defeated by anxiety concerning the quality of my future tweets

(What do I have to say? Who’ll read my tweets? What if my tweets are terrible?), and promptly closed my account — all within the span of about 5 minutes! In case you can’t tell already, I occasionally suffer from perfectionist tendencies that keep me from just being in the moment.

How’s this for being in the moment? The last yellow leaves are hugging the branches outside of my window and all I want to do is hibernate through the long, cold winter (I certainly have the tummy fat stored up for energy!). Since that’s not an option for an “eau-so-driven” career woman, however, here’s how I’ve been successfully perking myself up.

A Light in the Darkness

I grab my Slatkin & Co. Vanilla Sh ortbread Candle and fire that baby up! I’m not generally a fan of food-scented home fragrance but this one’s a marvelous melding of Madagascar vanilla, sugar cane and spices spiked with the aroma of yellow cake. It’s warm and surprisingly tart (kind of like me)!

Comedy and the City

My first summer job in NYC was way back in 1982 (Amsterdam Avenue was pre-gentrification, Keith Haring graffiti was still in the subway, and only black-clad punk rockers ventured into The Bowery). My 20s and most of my 30s were spent working in Creative Marketing at Macy’s Herald Square so, naturally, now that I call Columbus, OH home, I’m drawn to all things that remind me of my beloved NYC. I loved every episode of Sex and the City, I couldn’t wait for the movie debut, and now I’m thoroughly enjoying escaping into Candace Bushnell’s novel,

One Fifth Avenue. It’s giving me the incredible feeling of living in two places at the same time!

Baby in the Bath Water

I soak in the tub with my hubby year-round — when we travel, when I’m sad, when we’re celebrating and, particularly, when we need to discuss something potentially controversial and angst-inducing. We’ve learned that getting into the tub together for a serious pow-wow always keeps things from getting too heated (well, you know what I mean!). It’s impossible to get angry when we’re both wearing nothing but something like Aromatherapy Body Wash Sensuality in Jasmine Vanilla!

Twilight... the Fragrance

Until now, my favorite Bath and Body Works Signature Collection scent was the incredibly sexy Black Amethyst™. This year, I’ve been dying for the launch of the alluringly addictive (for me) Twilight Woods ™. I love it so much I just splurged on the Triple Moisture Shower and Body Creams, Body Butter, and a bottle of the elegantly decorated Eau de Toilette. The fragrance itself is a delicious blending of apricot nectar, mimosa petals, and Tuscan cypress. I find it so inspiring that after giving myself another mist on the neck and wrists last Friday night, I took a walk in the woods outside my window, looked up at those tenacious yellow leaves on the trees, and delighted in the rain falling on my face (and blurring my contacts!).

The Daily Spritz: DIY Signature Scent!

I'm playing mad scientist today.

As I've previously mentioned I LOVE C.O. Bigelow Lemon Eau de Parfum. Recently, I've been cheating on my lemon lover with something a little more gourmand — The Perfect Autumn Ginger Vanilla Fragrance Mist. Today however, my two loves met, and let's just say the results were...YUMMY!

If I thought either made me smell good enough to eat before, watch out! I now smell a bit like a lemon chiffon cake with a graham cracker crust...too scrumptious for words. (Admittedly, smelling like a dessert isn't for everyone, but to me it's HEAVENLY!)

LITTLE MISS WARNING: Mixing scents is not for the faint of heart! My advice — do a little trial before you go out on the town with a spritz of this, a dab of that and mist of something else...otherwise you could end up being the girl with stink lines like Pig-Pen from The Peanuts!

I started my DIY by just putting the two spritzers up to my nose at the same time to see if they'd even begin to blend together nicely. Try spritzing your desired concoction on a sheet of clean white paper, and wait 'til it dries to give it a sniff test. It's easy to tweak on paper vs once you've gotten yourself all soaked in scent!

If You Can't Tone It, TAN IT!

What can I say...I'm a child of the 80's and I LOVE the look of being tan!
I spent most of my formative years laying out in the sun, likely doing damage beyond repair (that I have yet to see the effects of!).

But even though I had the entire summer off on maternity leave, I had no time for lounging poolside in the sun (not that I really wanted to be in a bathing suit mind you). And, now that it's the end of summer, I find myself looking in the mirror lamenting the paleness of my skin color.
So, I'm on a quest to find a great self-tanner to get me through the fall and winter!

Luckily, Bath & Body Works has some really fun options for getting that post-sunning glow (without the time investment, body drama or the potential wrinkles!). Right now I'm trying Glow & Steady from the True Blue Spa line (a faux tanning lotion that provides moisturizing benefits for super soft skin, smells good — a definite plus for a self-tanner — and provides SPF 25 to boot!). Plus, since it's a gradual self-tanner, so no one will be shocked by my end of summer sudden color explosion! And so far I'm loving the results.

I Tried It: The Scrub Trials #1

As I mentioned yesterday, I will be giving a bevy of different body scrubs a rub-a-dub-dub in the tub to find the best way to soothe the super bumpy skin on my arms and legs in a little test I like to call The Scrub Trials.

Aromatherapy Energy Orange Ginger Sudsing Scrub

I decided to kick off the first day of The Scrub Trials with a bang — or a bubble, I suppose!

After a long, leisurely Labor Day weekend, getting out of bed was NOT coming easy this morning, so as I scanned the scrub lineup, the only one that seemed fitting was the Aromatherapy Energy scrub. Just what I needed to start a sleepy day...a serious BOOST while I suds-ed and scrubbed.

Here's the lowdown:

* The orange and ginger essential oil blend was exactly what I needed to wake up! Orange essential oil refreshes your senses and relieves tension. Ginger essential oil stimulates and sharpens the mind. The scent totally lingered throughout the day and paired brilliantly with my C.O. Bigelow Lemon Eau de Parfum (citrus double whammy!).

* The suds factor is there, but I was definitely expecting a bigger, bubblier foam, so that was a bit of a letdown... Since I wasn't counting on this as my cleanser though, no big loss.

* The scrub factor? Gentle.

The exfoliating sugar is very fine and washes away pretty quickly due to the foaming action.

I noticed a difference in my bumps, sure, but they definitely weren't gone by any stretch (not that I expected one day to cure me!). I still found myself with several larger bumps and they were even more red because I so abrasively tried to scrub them away (Out, damned spot! Out, I say!).

* Bonus points for the squeezy tube — there's nothing worse than having to dig your hand into a jar (or having to open one while your hands are wet and slippery in the shower).

This one is MAJORLY convenient for squeezing out just what you need to get your scrub on.

Final Verdict: Overall a great pick-me-up in the morning, but if you're looking for a more intense exfoliator (like me!), keep searching...

This Week at Little Miss: The Scrub Trials

I have a confession...I've got something, well, a little icky...

It's called keratosis pilaris — in layman's terms, chicken skin (ew!).

We're not talking the fleeting thrill of goosebumps or the chills...this is all day, all the time...not just a cold weather surprise. Basically, I constantly have these tiny white bumps all over my arms above the elbow that just do not go away. Sometimes I get them on my legs, too.

It's quite harmless, in fact, it's estimated that around 50% of the world's population have it in some form or another, but nonetheless, it's unpleasant looking. Oh, and did I mention it's hereditary?! I've got it mildly...thankfully.

Unfortunately, due to it's unsightly nature, it drives me BONKERS!

The best cure for me? A good, ol' fashion scrubbin'!

A great scrub makes serious work of those bumps, and for the most part gives my skin a much smoother, more touchable and even appearance.

So, over the next few weeks, I'm trying the best of the best scrubs out there.

I'll fill you in on what works, what doesn't, how they smell, and the whole nine yards.

Now, little bumps — BE GONE!

Although I'm a sucker for puppies in general, with 3 of my own I'm definitely partial to chihuahuas and dachshunds.

They are the loves of my life (besides my sweet BF, of course!), and I know they're ALWAYS happy to see me and ALWAYS dying to kiss and cuddle (even if my breath stinks in the morning).

P.S. Even though they are tiny and precious I do NOT use my pups as accessories! Ew!

Love List Day 3: Peonies

Despite the fact that EVERYONE thinks I'm saying "panties" instead of "peonies," they top my list of THE most elegant, feminine flowers — EVER.

Their scent, their colors, their delicate petals, their big blooms...everything about them just screams pretty-pretty-pretty.

P.S.: They're SO romantic and gorgeous in fact, that the other bridesmaids and I carried hot pink ones at Little Mrs. Newlywed's wedding this summer! They looked timelessly chic against our black cotton dresses.

Love List Day 2: Lykke Li

If you don't know Lykke Li, you won't be able to forget her name after you hear this song (if you can even pronounce it that is!).

The reason I love her and ESPECIALLY this song? It's soft, sensual and just a pinch sugary...and it seriously still gives me butterflies every time I listen.

Totally crush-worthy.

Maybe I haven't previously mentioned my obsession, but I happen to ADORE cocktail rings.

It's like shoes...I'm in constant need of more, more, MORE.

The bigger the better and the glitzy-er...the giddier I get!

So, when I spotted Michael Kors' new Very Hollywood Solid Perfume Cocktail Ring I was complete ga-ga — combining my love of perfume with a GORGEOUS accessory...sigh...be still my heart...

The fragrance notes are just as enticing — it sounds like a bright, femme blend of citrus and florals (right up my alley!) — flirty and glam right down to every last detail.

Unfortunately, this adorable gem will set you back a pretty penny (unlike my uber-inexpensive Forever21 finger wardrobe) at a whopping $40.

PLUS — the description doesn't even reveal what size it is...so, who knows if it'll even fit.

But (since I just can't resist), I'm going to keep this pretty pink jewel bookmarked for a day when I feel like a splurge!
